I held onto this one on my kindle for so long I forgot what it was about. I admit it took a bit for me to switch genre's in my brain to catch onto what was happening. However, when I did, Wow. This story was well written it had twists and turns and crazy all rolled up into one magical journey. I really enjoyed it and I'm glad I'm pushing through to clean up my carousel. The Missing Heir of Mandralay is a complex and intriguing book. It explores so many of the things that make us human, including the way people form connections, the seducing nature of power, the struggle between the good and the darkness within each of us, sin, guilt and redemption. The story is woven carefully, and needed information is dealt out at just the right rate. The story is told by an innocent girl and the most depraved of monsters. How they come to understand each other is truly touching and enlightening. I'd recommend this book to anyone over thirteen.
What an awesome start for The Missing Heir of Mandralay by Braden Bell. It grabbed me from the first phrase and didn't let me go to the last page. "Kill the child," that got my attention early on in the story and even more as the first phrase in the book. From then on, I went for a magic wagon ride with the characters in this great tale of love, redemption and forgiveness.
The crown baby is to die because her aunt is planning a coupe and she is in the way. But all changes when the woman that was to kill the baby at her birth changes her mind.
Now some years later, the orphan girl is being visited by lights that do what she wants. This is Interesting since she doesn't really know why. The more she commands the lights, the more Holly Mother becomes agitated. What does it all mean?
Braden Bell did a great job with her world building and the complicity of the characters. I found The Missing Heir of Mandralay among my favorite fantasy/magic books. I love the characters and their unique personalities. It is clean, as in no bad words, sex or gory. It will be enjoyed by kids from pre-teens to adults alike. This is great book to pass on to your kids and grandkids. Awesome job.
This is a great story that kept me reading! A great story about overcoming our internal struggles and natures. Can't wait for book 2!
This is a five-star book because I can see in my mind everything that is happening. It's compelling enough to be made into a TV series. I hope it does! I recommend this book to all readers ages ten and up.
This story was wonderfully unique in its relationships, magic, and story line. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it and hope there is more to Talia's story.
Well, a second installment in this series cannot come soon enough! This was totally a unique and fresh offering in the fantasy genre. Though the unfamiliar was introduced gradually, it was not slow. Just enough hints that the revelations at the end were logical. Great job by an accomplished author!
I love redemption stories. I also like stories that imbue characters with realistic natures that include both good and evil elements. In most books for younger audiences, if the protagonist has flaws, they are usually based on minor defects (the character is brooding, rude, mischievous, etc.). In this book the protagonists struggle with truly evil tendencies. I think he does a great job creating interesting characters with these flaws. He also has an interesting system of magic. One thing I dislike in many books that include magic is that it is often easy for someone to take away the free will of others. Braden Bell also includes this ability, but it was integral to the story-line, and he did a fairly good job handling it.
