The Slab. A vast orbiting slum where sweat falls in rain and the gene-spliced come in all shapes and sizes. Inspector Alex McLeod, recently suspended for excessive force and nurturing a growing addiction to bourbon, has been reduced to tending bar when an improbably beautiful vampire comes to him with a bizarre theory there's a killer on the Slab, a killer with a liking for recreating ancient myth, in bloody and spectacular fashion. But who exactly is this vampire, and how does she know so much? And what kind of killer can walk through security systems without a trace, leaving deadly traps for those hunting him?
A Hymn to Gods Long Dead is a novella forming third story in the Slab City Blues series. Each story can be read in isolation.
Slab City Blues A Hymn To Gods Long Dead A Science Fiction Detective Story eBook Anthony Ryan
This is the third short story in a series of four (so far) in this particular universe. I read this one first, then realized there were others, and since I liked this one, I sought out the harder to find first two stories, then went back and read the last one.As of this review, the first two stories are available to download for free from the author's website, I don't know how long that will be the case.
While the stories are short, they are good fun. A sort of hard-boiled, pulp detective yarn, set on a future space station. Each book is a roughly a complete case in the overall arc of a deeper story. I hope to see more stories in this world, it is an interesting but somewhat underdeveloped place. But I guess that means there are a lot of possibilities for the future!
I went with four stars, because I wish there had been a bit more!

Slab City Blues A Hymn To Gods Long Dead A Science Fiction Detective Story eBook Anthony Ryan Reviews
This is a great story and well written. I've read his other 2 short stories (the author tells you where you can download PDF's of the other 2 stories for free) and they are well written as well. A gritty police story with a touch of scifi; the beauty is the tech stuff doesn't get in they way of the actual story. Things just happen because the people in the story are accustomed to it and the writer doesn't force feed you unnecessary details.
I read Raven's Shadow which turned me on to this book by the same author. I REALLY liked Raven's Shadow, and hoped the author could write some good non-fantasy work.
My hopes were answered. The book was a quick and fun read. Not as in depth as Raven's Shadow, but I liked the different environment the author was able to create in. I look forward to more works from Anthony Ryan!
I bought this book after finishing Ryan's "Blood Song" and the two prequels to Slab City Blues (available on Ryan website for free (which is awesome)). I went in not knowing what to expect and wasn't disappointed. I strongly encourage downloading and reading the preceding novels in this series just to give you some background on some of the characters and a feel for the universe. A scifi noir novel with memorable characters, great action scenes, and some pretty damn poignant moments make this an enjoyable read and at 99 cents this is a steal. Watch for big things from this author as I have a feeling his work is just going to keep getting better and better.
This is a novella instead of a full book, but don't let that discourage you from reading this little gem. It pulled me in immediately, developed quickly into an exciting story and came to a satisfying conclusion in about 200 pages. The story involves the search by a cop on suspension and a vampire classic literature expert for a serial killer who is killing people based on ancient god myths. The action takes place on an orbital habitat and is an interesting blend of science fiction and mystery.
The author states that this is the third of 3 stories about "Slab City" and can be enjoyed on its own. While that's true, there is enough mentioned in the story that I feel I need to find and read the prior two to better understand the main character and the enviroment. The basic story ends, but in the last paragraph something happens that is obviously meant to be a lead in to the next story, so this obviously is meant to be a continuing saga.
There was a few misspelled words so the editing could be a little better, but I felt they were few enough to not detract from the story.
I would definitely recommend this story, although you might want to read the prior two first - I know I will be looking for them to read. I am also looking forward to his next "Slab City" installment, I hope it won't be too long of a wait.
Wonderful book. It is actually the third in a series of short novels, the other two are available for free on the authors web site. I highly recommend getting the other two first, although they can certainly be read independently.
Ryan is a fairly new author to the scene, but he is going to be one of the biggest, mark my words. He has a way of developing characters that makes you feel like you actually know them. Story plot is complex and intriguing.
Ryan creates a world that has a rich history of war and genetic manipulation, but instead of dictating this history to you, he allows you to discover it as the story unfolds. Truly a masterful job.
I highly recommend this series for any sci fi fan.
Let me preface this by saying that I really liked this book. I'm not sure exactly what he was going for but it reminded me a lot of early William Gibson. Kind of cyberpunk. Kind of Blade Runner. Pretty cool stuff.
In general, I like books that are nice and tidy. Perhaps leave some room for interpretation and imagination. I don't need to be spoon-fed everything.
I felt that this book was trying to be sparse when it really didn't need to be. There were some big concepts and themes in the book that I would have liked some explanation on.
It's not that this book is bad by any means. I just think that he could have legitimately beefed up the book and it would have been magnificent.
I didn't realize that it was a short story when I bought it so that was a little disappointing, but it's still a good read. You really need to read the first two stories, which are available on his blog for free, before you'll understand what's going on in this one. The stories themselves are written extremely well, though they are a bit hard to get into at first. The futuristic slang takes some getting used to, and you're pretty much thrust into a world that you know nothing about. The protagonist is a little too predictable and cliche, but I have yet to read a good detective story where the protagonist is not. Some of the events that take place are far fetched, even for a futuristic science-fiction novel. Either way, it was a great way to kill an evening or two.
This is the third short story in a series of four (so far) in this particular universe. I read this one first, then realized there were others, and since I liked this one, I sought out the harder to find first two stories, then went back and read the last one.
